It's common sense really. If you eat a smaller number of calories and don't exercise, you can lose weight. But if you eat a larger number of calories and exercise more, you're getting a larger quantity of non-caloric nutrients (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc) while burning off the additional calories.

Not to mention maintaining a higher metabolic rate, building muscle and increasing cardio-vascular health and endurance.
