Oct. 8th, 2008 07:25 pmThere's a show on Discovery about urban wildlife in Anchorage, AK, and it makes me really homesick. It showed folks fishing the June king runs on Ship Creek in downtown, moose settled in the lee of cars in people's driveway, and the morning commute on summer solstice, when the sun's already been up since 4AM.
They discussed the planning that went into building Anchorage... the large parks around the city, the vast green borders around streams and creeks through town, and it makes me sad. I want to grab people here in Bellingham and say, "see?! It can be done! You could have saved it all and you pissed it away for money and corporate sponsorship."
The hatchery in Maritime Heritage Park is cold, cold comfort. I've never fished salmon in Washington, and if I did I think I would feel guilty feeding on that already beleaguered population.
