Feb. 26th, 2008 06:00 pmSo I was lying in bed this morning, doing that slow, warm wakey-wakey thing. I looked at the alarm clock... it said 6:50. I snuggled back under my down comforter, relishing the fact that I still had ten minutes of warm, soft bedness. From outside, I hear an odd noise.
"fzzzzzzzt, pop!"
There's a moment of silence. I look at the alarm clock. It is blank.
Now knowing that if I drift back off to sleep the alarm will now not wake me up, I mutter to myself and throw back the covers. I get my jacket on, walk outside and light a cigarette. Across the street they are without power, and the rest of the building is dark, including the hall lights. I hear a siren and see, through the trees, the lights of a fire truck pulling up at a nearby intersection. I walk up the alley and along Potter to Lincoln. By the time I get there, there are two fire trucks, an ambulance, and an assortment of police vehicles. Detours are set up and caution tape is strung across the street. One of the powerlines is dangling low over the street.
Some fool kid hit one of the poles with his car.
He looked about nineteen, MAYBE 20.
For this I have to get dressed in the dark?
Work had no power as well... well, no grid power. We have this enormous generator, see, so we were still able to run almost everything. Which is something I never saw happen back at T-Mobile; during power outtages, despite the presence of a generator, we always seemed to be pretty helpless.
