I'm in the market for a new television. I may need to save up for a bit.

The price range I'm considering is $500.00 to $1000.00. Preferably closer to $500.00.

Having measured my livingroom, I probably don't want anything smaller than 30 inches or larger than 50 inches. I'd prefer smaller and better quality, since I rent and may need to move somewhere with a smaller livingroom at some point.

I want something NEW. With a warranty.

I know absolutely nothing about televisions.

But I figure I have some friends that are more technically savvy than I, and thought I would send out an appeal for advice.

I would rather have good picture quality than a massive screen. I want something relatively durable, as I intend to sink some money into this and will not be interested in purchasing a new television for at least a decade. I don't watch sports, and I don't generally play console games, although I may be interested in purchasing a Wii in the future.

I do love watching movies.

Anyone have any advice on the type of television I should be shopping for?

Does LCD provide a better picture quality than rear-projection CRT? I've heard LCD falls a bit short in black level and hence doesn't have as good contrast or detail.

Depends on the LCD screen, to be honest.
